This is not the first web toolkit or framework that Apple has released, though this one was rather quietly and hidden. Previous iterations include PastryKit for the iPhone/iPod Touch series of devices and another for the iTunes album content called TuneKit. This could be considered PastryKit for the iPad as the Ajaxian coined.

AdLib may not even be called that by the Apple Glitterati, it’s simply nicknamed that based on files found and the AD prefix in front of the API calls.

The iPad AdLib Framework is comprised solely of CSS, Javascript and HTML. While the extent of what theis new HTML5 framework brings to the table, looking at Safari’s bookmarks utility which is powered by the AdLib framework and unearthed files. This indicates that Apple is looking to integrate web applications and desktop application user interfaces in the way that Microsoft tried to do with their HTML help circa 2000. MSFT failed, Apple succeeds.

Reason? HTML5’s open Standards. Vehemently defended by El Jobso.

This all points to the release of OS 4.0 holding more than just interesting tweaks. Stay tuned to the 4.0 launch coming up tomorrow.

“The framework looks to be extremely well thought out and complete,” Hoskins says. “Perhaps this will be a framework to support a future release of Dashcode, an application for writing dashboard widgets and Safari/iPhone web apps.”

Nickelodeon announced the release of two new iPad apps available in the App Store that are targeted to kids using the iPad.
The two applications, Dora the Explorer and Daily Jigsaw for $4.99 and .99 respectively. Of the two apps, Dora looks to be the better (hence the higher price) with a lot of fun, creative things for kids to do on the iPad.
Last week, Disney’s iPad announcement was that it would launch several paid and free applications for the iPad.
Nickelodeon, bastion of all things kid-oriented (and purveyor of awesome sitcoms like Roseanne at night) are releasing two new iPad apps.

Not to be left out of the rush to market, a Nokia tablet PC is speculated to join Dell, Samsung, Hewlett-Packard and others in competition for a share of the iPad Tablet market.
Each one of the tablets offered will have their own unique characteristics ala USB, Cameras, Multi-Touch, etc. What appears to set them apart will be their power, speed, memory and compatibility with other technologies.
Google’s Chrome OS is rumored to be on Dell’s tablet-pc launch. The difference of Nokia is that they are a pure wireless company that is now getting into something stronger than a smartphone.
While Nokia has declined comment, analysts seem convinced that Nokia will indeed launch a tablet by fall of this year.

1000 Ultimate Experiences, based off the successful Lonely Planet title, is an iPad-ready applicationthat goes beyond typical travel guides. Lonely Planet packed this iPad app with tons of rich photos, video from Lonely Planet TV and all revolving around 1000 travel ideas for the avid venturer.
True to form, Lonely Planet’s app tells stories that entertain the user through their high-gloss, professional content. For $19.99, it seems reasonable that this is a suitable replacement for a book you could pick up at the store for around the same price, and still immerse yourself in an interactive travel guide experience through the iPad.

According to several analysis pieces on the subject of Amazon -v- Apple, it appears that Kindle mitigated what could have been a devistating situation by releasing it’s Amazon Kindle App so early on the iPhone and then updating it for the iPad.
Portability of the books seems to be key as well. Media purchased through the iBooks application from Apple is only available in that application, whereas the Kindle’s book purchases can be read on the Kindle device itself, the iPad, phones and personal computers as well as tablet PCs.
Meanwhile, at launch of the iPad, 250,000 books were downloaded at launch according to Apple’s statistics. What e-Reader platform that happened on, or who took the higher percentage remains a mystery.

Amazon’s Kindle App for the iPad has several advantages overApple’s iBook eReader app. For one, Kindle provides access to more than 450,000 books, blogs, magazines and newspapers whereas iBook had just 60,000 titles at launch.

It’s not a surprise that Apple, in its rush to launch the iPad, left out some pieces that users are up-in-arms about. Mainly, a lack of camera and a lack of USB ports, but others are grumbling now when looking at the features the HP Slate will support.
HP Slate’s tablet looks geared to the more power user and ships with the Intel Atom processor, Windows 7 and runs just like a laptop, only thinner and lighter. It also will support memory cards through an adapter, USB 2.0, has up to a 10 hour battery life, a camera and the list goes on.

It’s not a surprise that Apple, in its rush to launch the iPad, left out some pieces that users are up-in-arms about. Mainly, a lack of camera and a lack of USB ports, but others are grumbling now when looking at the features the HP Slate will support.

So early surveys showed that Kindle users were switching over to the iPad and/or had buyer’s remorse. The big question is: 7 months from now, will buyers have remorse over their purchases of iPad at launch in favor of the HP Slate? Personally, I think they are two separate audiences, but the HP Slate’s support from Windows may force Apple to integrate Adobe Flash into their tablet pc to stay competitive…no-one likes websites with big holes in them…

HP seems to be using a 1.6-GHz Intel Atom processor compared to the proprietary 1-GHz Apple A4 processor. However, actual performance of the two cannot be compared as the Atom is a general purpose processor used in many of the netbook PCs on the market, while the Apple A4 processor could have proprietary technology for performance optimization.

The HP slate device has a connector for reading SD, SDHC, and SDXC cards up to 128 GB, as well as a USB 2.0 port and a connector for an optional docking station, of which the Apple iPad has none.

On Monday, MuscleNerd announced their successful jailbreak of the iPad and iPhone 3G devices called Spirit. A jailbreak is a way that developers actually “hack” into the operating system of the iPad tablet pc and remove the protection that forces owners to only go through the App Store for their software.
A device that has a jailbreak applied will then be allowed to have their own software or bootleg songs and software without going through iTunes or Apple’s store. It also allows a device to be “unlocked” and usable outside of the mandatory AT&T carrier service.

Jailbreaks are nothing new to the iPhone OS, the first version of the OS was cracked within a month. However, the fact that a new product like the iPad runs on the same operating system as the iPhone made it easier. In late March, George Hotz claimed to have a jailbreak that would work on the tablet at iPad Launch, but that never materialized or at least has not been promoted as complete.

MuscleNerd, a well reputed iPhone and iPad Jailbreaker produced a video to demonstrate how anyone at home can crack and add software to their iPad. The iPad runs OS 3.2 and will upgrade to OS 4.0 when that is released for the iPhone. It is also speculated that the iPad 3G will be vulnerable to this jailbreak.

For average users, there’s no fear that someone else will hack into your phone or iPad unless you give it to them and they actually apply/hack into it, so don’t worry. But for the higher-end developer users, we’re all aware of how cool it is to actually get to the “root” of your device and muck around in the operating system.

While iPhone users can rely on jailbreaking to unlock their handset for use with unauthorized carriers, the 3G-capable version of the iPad, scheduled to arrive in late April, ships unlocked by default. However, its 3G frequencies are only compatible with AT&T in the U.S.

But the warranty-voiding jailbreak process can also allow users to run software Apple does not allow. Hackers have created their own custom applications that allow features, like multitasking, which not currently permitted within the iPhone OS.

It’s no secret that Adobe Flash and iPad do not mix. It’s also no secret that Steve Jobs has said that HTML5 and open standards are the stronger of the languages, going so far as to say that Cocoa could take on Flash any-day. Rumor has it, however, that it’s the GPU that is the real culprit here.
Well, the Adobe Photoshop App has not been updated since 1/22. What else happened 5 days later? Oh yeah, Apple announced the iPad Launch.

Now, I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but I am a deductive logician. It doesn’t take much to connect the dots here and see that Adobe, who was regularly updating their software before, has a grudge against the iPad Flash-less browser and the push that Steve Jobs is giving HTML5 and CSS3. So we’ll see how long it takes Adobe to update their App…it may be as long as it takes the iPad to run Flash.

Developers are gearing up for the next round of browsers that they have to develop web applications for. A world without browser plug-ins is the world that Apple pictures, as their iPad browser doesn’t support even Flash, the most common plug-in on the web.
An early decision from Apple was that the iPad would only render videos and other multimedia found commonly on the internet in HTML5. While this is typical for Apple to control their environment, never before have they been able to control the user’s browsing experience to this level before the iPad.
Now, from an iPad developer standpoint, this makes another browser to throw into the cross-compatibility mix. The biggest hurdle is that HTML5 is not backwards compatible, so browsers like IE6 (which will not die), will never be able to display videos natively.

Compounding the issue is that even iPad designed sites that are HTML5 compliant won’t be able to use drag-and-drop. You know, the old cornerstone of web 2.0? Yeah, it seems that the iPad multi-touch doesn’t support drag and drop, so all that work that devs put into their websites will have to be ripped out.

The good news is that, if your site isn’t heavy on the flash, a conversion to the iPad ready website formats isn’t a giant hurdle. The bad news is that, if you use flash, you have a lot of iPad development ahead of you…

But unlike Flash, HTML5 doesn’t yet have a lot of production-ready integrated developer environments. “Flash has very good authoring tools,” Lawson said. As McAllister noted, Dreamweaver and FlashBuilder are already incorporated into the day-to-day operations of many Web development shops.

In contrast, the tools for HTML5 and related technologies are still being developed. Worse yet, many are aimed more at the programmer than the run-of-the-mill Web designer. As one media company told the Valleywag industry gossip site, “Guess what, we don’t have a bunch of code junkies in our newsroom.” (Though Adobe itself seems to be in the early stages of incorporating the HTML5 standards into its own production tools, if this prototype of Dreamweaver that converts artwork into HTML5’s Canvas tag is any indication).

Another potential problem: The HTML5 standard has not actually been finalized yet.
