iTunes 9.1 Updated for iPad

Apple released iTunes 9.1 with specific support for the iPad as another pre-release salvo for the iPad’s April 3rd launch.  iTunes 9.1 was released just days before the official shipping date for the iPad. The iTunes update clearly states that the new version of iTunes includes support for sync, including not only music but “books on the go”. Clearly, Apple is banking on iTunes being the springboard for most revenue through their music, movies, applications and now books through the iBookstore.  The second bullet below further highlights Apple’s planned penetration into the e-Reader market. Sync with iPad to enjoy your favorite music, movies, TV shows, books and more on the go Organize and sync books you’ve downloaded from iBooks on iPad or added to your iTunes library … Read entire article »

iBookstore for iPad is an E-Reader Killer

Look out Kindle and Nook, here comes the iBookstore for the iPad and that means trouble for the entire stand-alone, e-Reader market.  Powered by a fledgling digital books company called Smashwords, the iBookstore opens the door to self-publishing authors and puts very strict guidelines on the publishing and pricing models. According to AppleInsider, all books must be priced ending in .99 (ala 10.99, 4.99) and can be sold for as low as .99 cents.  Apple revenue is sure to feel the benefit of distributing their own books, and between that and the revenue generated from the iPad sales (projected to be up to 5 billion this year).  Couple that with an initial loading of 10,000 books in the iBookstore that are free, public-domain books, and iBookstore looks to be a hit. Amazon, Barnes & Noble e-Reader Software Not Launching On iPad

Amazon announced that it would, indeed, be launching software for its popular Kindle e-Reader platform that will work on the iPad Tablet.  Now, Barnes & Noble also sees the writing on the wall as it announces their own iPad e-Reader application.  Apple, however, not playing favorites, is not OEM-ing either software on the iPad when they ship. Of the two platforms, Kindle has a current wide lead in the e-Reader platform with 45% by common estimates with Sony in second place with 30% and the Barnes & Noble’s Nook lumped in with the remaining 25%.  It is worth noting that, with 40% of e-Reader owners looking to upgrade to an iPad and use it for their book and text reading that this was a no-brainer for both companies. It’s apparent to all … Read entire article »

Amazon Creates Free Kindle App for iPad

From the “if you can’t beat em, join em” department, Amazon appears to be hedging their bets on their hardware with some crafty iPad software.  The iPad will support Amazon’s Kindle application, which is a seeming tip-of-the-hat from Jobs in accepting Bezos’ resignation as king of all e-readers. It’s a brilliant move by Amazon.  Really.  Hardware is an overhead cost, and if Kindle can work purely off a distributed software model and, similar to iTunes, just sell digital books…well, profit goes way up! Amazon, to its credit, has had their Kindle software available on the iPhone and iPod Touch for a while now, but reading on a 3.5″ LCD is very different from reading a book or magazine on the iPad’s 10″ screen. Good for you, Amazon.  I think no matter who wins … Read entire article »
